Pharmacognosy
What is pharmacognosy?
The word "Pharmacognosy" derived from two
Greek words, "pharmakon" (drug), and "gnosis" (knowledge). Pharmacognosy today
covers all aspects of drugs (physical, chemical, biochemical and biological
properties) and even the the search for new drugs from natural products. The
various subject areas included within pharmacognosy includes
phytochemistry, microbial chemistry, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites,
chemotaxonomy, and many others. Our modern pharmacognostic approach of drug
discovery includes the following key principal bioassay-guided-isolation
procedures.
