Analysis of Lemongrass Essential Oil by GC-MS


In this example of GC analysis, seven components of lemongrass essential oil are shown. Components B and D with the retention time of 12.95 and 13.92 minutes respectively are the major constituents of interest. If we are using the destructive method of detection method such as FID, this is all the information we get and our interpretation of the spectra is rather limited to just comparison based on retention times. On this basis, one may suspect that the minor component A could be a number of possibilities including linalool. The GC and MS analysis of the linalool standard is shown below:

The MS pattern of the standard was similar with that obtained from the lemongrass oil component A and hence led to its identification as linalool. Similarly  component C of the lemongrass essential oil was identified as geraniol  based on the following data:
